Trombonist, composer, and serious mensch Alan Ferber -- who subbed in a couple of Secret Society rehearsals last week and sounds absolutely killing -- brings his nonet to Smalls tonight. A lot of New Yorker jazz fans I talk to don't seem to realize that Smalls is back from the grave -- so if you haven't checked out the reanimated version of the club yet, tonight is an excellent time to do it. Alan is joined by Secret Society co-conspirator Will Vinson on alto sax, Dan Pratt on tenor sax, Douglas Yates on bass clarinet, and David Smith on trumpet. The rhythm section is Bruce Saunders on guitar, Bryn Roberts on piano, Alexis Cuadrado on bass and John Riley on drums. Sets at 10 PM and 11:30 PM, $10 cover. Oh, and Zombie Smalls (unlike its predecessor in life) actually has a liquor license now, so you probably don't want to show up at the door with a bottle of Colt 45 in a brown paper bag or anything.
