It would be hard to overstate how beloved Joe was by the students who took his microtonal improv class at NEC. It seemed he lit a fire in everyone who'd enrolled, through the sheer force of his outsized personality. I never dipped my toe in that well, but I certainly respected him as a true saxophone original and as an inspirational -- practically evangelical -- educator.

In the 1960's, I lived on President Street in Park Slope, and Joe Maneri was a neighbor. I was sorry he hear of his death. My condolences to his family.
